Admin Post

Dear DD members and watchers,

We have removed the tag 'miscegenation' from our community and list of themes, and presently ask all writers and artists who used this term to remove it from the headers of their posts. We acknowledge that this term is hurtful, and we sincerely apologise for any offence it has caused. Concerns over our terminology may always be expressed to the moderators, who are happy to engage in dialogue about it, and, we hope, reach a resolution acceptable to all parties.

Please excuse our delay in responding, but understand that our moderators are in very different time zones, in addition to one being very ill, one on vacation, and one moving house this week. Further, we wanted to allow ample time to consult with our writers and artists and listen to their input, to consider all opinions expressed to us since yesterday, and, of course, to research the term in question, to prevent going forth with incomplete or inaccurate information.

That said, our decision is ultimately that of the moderators, and our writers, artists, and watchers are of course free to disagree with us - as they were yesterday as well.

Comments were disabled yesterday only because of the moderators' inability to answer them, because of the constraints mentioned above. We did not and do not wish to stifle discussion, although we also wish to reserve this community space for fic and art. There are plenty of other places on LJ, including your own journals, in which you are free to continue this discussion.

Kind regards,
DD Mod Team

May I suggest that you remove this: http://community.livejournal.com/daily_deviant/168740.html

I would be more gracious about accepting this apology if the post linked above had not been made. Delays in response due to poor health, business, or lack of available communication are understandable; whomever made that initial post claiming "defamation," however, didn't seem to have any trouble in being up close and personal. At this point, all we can surmise is that either someone spoke out of turn, or you're trying to cover your asses b/c this turned out to be a lot more universally negative than you thought. I would like to believe the best, however, and shall therefore not bother you further on the subject.

I hope that your community can go forward from this, and learn from this mistake.

No, we would rather not remove it. We believe it shows how our position changed after careful consideration of the input of many community members and watchers, as well as voices outside our community. I have edited that post to link to this one, however, as our current position on the matter.

Thanks for posting this. I'm glad that you reconsidered your stance and made an apology for the use of the offending term. However, I feel that you owe [info]zvi_likes_tv a personal apology for the accusation of defamation (where she has not, so far as I can tell, misrepresented any of your communications or practices) and for the rude personal response to her request. I hope you will consider making this further amends.

I actually thought both sides were being as polite and cordial to each other as possible in regards to this touchy issue. In my mind, neither side owes the other an apology for the emails.

Thank you. You have no idea how glad I am that you are willing to publically change your mind and change the term. I think that it is the right decision, and reflects well upon you all.

I'm glad to see you changed this. I don't think any rule is worthy hurting and offending people when it can be avoided.

Thank you.

Good for you. It takes a lot to be able to make a post like this. I don't agree with your initial stance and declaration of defamation, but I appreciate the fairness that it took to change your minds.

Although I believe that you initial position was, in fact, the more correct one, it is a positive thing that you are able to take all considerations under advisement, and admit when something needs to be changed.

I agree. While I don't agree that it should have been changed (I don't like censorship in any form, and will even stand up for the right of the original emailer to call me "honky" - which is blatantly racist - because I am white), kudos to you for being willing to take the first step to make peace over it.

thank you for apologizing for the use of the word and for changing your terminology. I hope you will consider [info]coffeeandink's suggestion and apologize to [info]zvi_likes_tv personally for your accusations of defamation and slander.

I Too did not know that Miscegenation had such a Terrible connotation, so I am right there with You on the Ignorance bit. When I learned what it Meant I felt like Burying my head in the sand, much like You did in the Earlier post except not as defensive. After I quickly De-friended this Community because I felt too Embarrassed to be connected to it In any way. It felt like I had said something horribly racist myself without knowing it and that it was there for all The world to see on my Friend's page. I am now Friending it back, because in this Terribly Imperfect world it takes Guts to do what You're Supposed to do in the first place and fortunately people are Grateful for it.

So Thank You, I do feel grateful and We have all learned a lot from this.

Thank you for your choice to rethink your decision. I also agree with others that you ought to consider issuing [info]zvi_likes_tv a personal apology -- if nothing else, it will help erase the rather nasty taste which lingers.
